The first thing you have to ask yourself is what is your goal from this website?

You may have a website that is incredibly lame like a lot of electricians that come my way. Maybe it’s something that you built in GoDaddy or somewhere for free or maybe it’s something that someone built for you a while ago or a brother in law, a cousin.
It always blows my mind that guys that are full time employed (self-employed) with customers and everything else, for something so important these days as a website, budget like nothing or $20.00 or something. You really need to think a little differently.
I am going to give you some real good ideas for how to go about building one for yourself or at least point you in the right direction. And yes, of course, I am in business and we do websites and search engine optimization but you can gain a lot from this presentation without even giving me a call.
Anyway, what is your goal?
A. Is it a showcase for your work? What I mean by this is a lot times contractors will come to me (electricians, plumbers and roofers) and they want a website. But unlike most of my customers that are looking for sales leads and more customers, they’ll say, “I’ve got plenty of work. I just want something classy incredible so that customers of mine and people that I’m giving bids are ready that maybe have heard about me through word of mouth can go somewhere and see my work, see some testimonials from my existing customers, learn a little bit about me, see about experience.” That’s what I mean by a showcase for your work. That’s important to know out of the gate.
B. Are you looking for Sales leads? If you’re looking for customers and prospects, you need to know that from the beginning because we need to identify some certain key factors that will be involved from the get go in compiling your site.
For example, we want to identify the keywords like electrician, electrical contractor, panel upgrades, generator hook ups, surge suppression, all that fun stuff that we’re going to target. That’s important because those words need to appear on the site in the form of content if you ever want to get found when people are looking for them. That’s the name of the game.
The other list that we need is the list of the towns that you target. What’s your service area? Again, these towns need to appear on the site preferably often because otherwise, how is Google going to know that Hampton Electrical Contractor is you if you’re not based in Hampton. A lot of you guys service 30 miles or so around you and you’re own town may account for only 10% of your business or less. So, we need to let the search engines know that you are in business or you are servicing these other towns.
Think of the keywords like the services that you provide. So, when someone searches for “generator hook up in Motleyville”, we want to have a page on your site about that and the search engine will then be much more likely to find you.
C. Is it something else? We need to know these goals. Maybe you’re out to sell product on your site or you have some course that you’re looking to sell. Maybe you’re licensed to teach continuing education for electricians. We need to know what the site is all about.
What is WordPress?
A. WordPress is a platform on which websites and blogs are built. I am a WordPress expert. My company specializes in WordPress. If you are an electrician thinking about a website whether you do it with us, whether you do it on your own, whether you do it with someone else, I urge you to consider WordPress as your platform. You will thank me later. That’s all you really need to know. Just like GoDaddy is a platform or whatever. Google has some website platforms. It’s just a thing on which to build your website.
B. WordPress is a blog at its heart. This is important to know. It’s going to look exactly like a website. It walks like a duck, it sounds like a duck, it is a duck. It is a website. But you should know that the history of WordPress is that it began as a blogging platform.
That’s good for you because when you have a website that is built in a blogging platform, the search engines are much more likely to find it. Search engines love blogs. So, when you build a website that is built on a blog platform, you tend to get found more which is the name of the game, right? We want phone calls.
C. I say that it’s similar to the iPhone. This is what I mean by that. I mean that what makes an iPhone powerful is the fact that you have these developer all over the world that are creating apps and Apple decides whether which ones are available for the iPhone. These developers can make anywhere from a buck to several dollars or more every time someone downloads or pays for that app. This is the heart of the iPhone, it’s these apps. There’s literally anything that you want to do. You can find an app for it.
WordPress is similar except that WordPress they’re not called apps. They are called plug-ins. Plug-ins, just like apps on iPhone, are made by developers all over the world and they are submitted to WordPress. A lot of them are free, some of them cost a couple of bucks, and some of them cost more. But these plug-ins makes WordPress very, very powerful.
If you want to add a picture gallery of your work, there’s a plug-in for that. Let’s say you wanted to have your customers talking on your site about what great work you do in audio format, there’s a plug-in for that. Let’s say you want to have videos displayed in a certain way, there’s a plug-in for that. This is one of the things that make WordPress great. It’s an open source.
D. It’s very, very simple. It’s simple to use, it’s simple to understand but it’s extremely powerful. If any of you guys have an iPhone or a droid, it’s not rocket science to use it but yet it there’s some real powerful technology and I think WordPress is similar.
Why use WordPress?
A. It’s very user friendly. If you want to manage it yourself, if you want to add pictures, if you want to create pages or make changes, it is ridiculously easy. I know you might be saying, “There’s no way that I can do that.” That’s just not true. If you can type an email, can you type an email? If you can type an email, you can create a WordPress page. If you can upload a picture of your kid to a computer, you can add pictures to WordPress. If you can’t do that, we can show you how to do it or you can find a video for it on YouTube. But I’ll show you how to do it. It’s crazy easy yet powerful.
B. It’s search friendly. I’ve talked about it earlier that when you have a WordPress site, just by the very nature of it, if content is added monthly which is what we do for our electrician clients but you can do it yourself as well. If content in the form of pages and blog posts are added each month to your site then search engines love that. By search engines I mean Google, Yahoo and Bing. The three of them account for about 95% of searches. We want to get found when people search for terms like electrician and electrical contractors, etcetera, and if you have a WordPress site with content being added monthly or weekly that is keyword targeted in our content and it’s created in a certain way, those Google search engines and Yahoo search engines are much more likely to find you.
C. It’s also easy to makes pages. The more pages that you have on the site- the better. A lot of guys don’t realize this. They say, “Just give me a two-page site. Just keep the price down. That’s all I care about.” Well, you shouldn’t care about that because a 500-page site is a hundred times more likely to get found than a 5-page site. And I’m not talking a lot of money. You can those extra 495 pages yourself if you want. If you have us do it, we’re not talking big bucks. By saying that it’s a hundred times more likely to get found, maybe if I say your phone is a hundred times more likely to ring if you have a lot of pages on your site, maybe that will hit home with you. That’s what I’m talking about is important. You want a lot of pages on your site and you want them built in a certain manner.
D. It’s easy to edit pages. I talked about this earlier. Anyone can do it, a 5-year old can do that.
I’ll take a quick look at Google here and let’s go check out a site. Here’s a client of mine CJH Electric. It’s a WordPress site. It’s a nice looking site. It’s got tons of content in it. This guy is in Southern Maine. All over Southern Maine he comes up on the first page of Google and usually at the top.
You can do that once a day for a year, you will dominate.
